Here’s a simple endgame position with equal material from the game Makarow-Schechodanow, Moscow, 1979. White has nothing to do – no great planning or long calculations. All White needs is just one simple move to win it all! What’s White’s best move?

If you thought it was f4 then give yourself a big pat on the back. That traps the Black Rook forever. White can then continue operations with the Queenside pawns on b and c. The Black King is cut off via the e-file and Black will not be able to Queen. Quite a painful loss for Black.
